Compass dip

The magnetic field that determines the direction in which the compass needle points does not always run conveniently parallel to the Earth’s surface. In higher latitudes it dives in towards the Earth at a considerable angle, and of course the compass needle tries to follow it. The needle’s bearings constrain it from doing this, but the fact that it is trying renders its movements ever more sluggish until, in certain areas, the compass stops working altogether. Sailors in moderate latitudes need not be concerned with this, but if you are planning an epic voyage into the ice, it will be a factor for consideration.

Every boat should carry a handbearing compass, but don’t forget the iPhone carries a surprisingly accurate alternative compass. The author has used his when it mattered. It works!
